Softball Closes Florida Trip With 12-3 Win Over Thomas

CLERMONT, Fla. – Buffalo State (5-6) closed out its spring trip to Florida with a 12-3 victory over Thomas College (0-6) in six innings on Wednesday afternoon at the National Training Center.

Chrissy Rennard's (Brockport, NY/Brockport) single up the middle in the top of the second gave the Bengals their first run of the game. Thomas answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie things up. Buffalo State's bats came alive in the third as the Bengals tallied four runs off five hits and also took advantage of two Thomas throwing errors to go ahead 5-1. Heading into the fourth inning, another throwing error from Thomas helped Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) score a sixth run. Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) scored on the following play off an RBI from Kate Brownell (Batavia, NY/Oakfield-Alabama). Alexis Haley (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) ripped a double to left center field in the top of the fifth to put Buffalo State ahead 8-1. The Bengals pushed their lead to 11 with four runs off of back-to-back errors from the Terriers in the sixth inning. Thomas managed to tally two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bengals got out of the inning and sealed the 12-3 win.

Melissa Magiera (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) finished the day 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBI's. Jean Stahl (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) finished 3 for 4 with a run scored, while both Taylor Swiatek (East Aurora, NY/Orchard Park) and Joanna Bardak (Amherst, NY/Amherst) finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored.  

Jordan Sarat (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia—Mumford) earned the win in the circle. She pitched the final three innings of the game, allowing two runs on one hit with one strikeout. Alison Novak (Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) started the game, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts in three innings.

The Bengals finished the game with a season-high 12 hits.

Buffalo State's home opening weekend scheduled for March 27 and 28 has been postponed. The Bengals next scheduled game is at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 3 at Plattsburgh.
