Softball Sweeps Plattsburgh in SUNYAC Opener

BUFFALO, NY – Buffalo State (7-6, 2-0 SUNYAC) opened its conference slate with a pair of victories over Plattsburgh (6-12, 1-3 SUNYAC), winning 5-3 and 5-0. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Plattsburgh, but due to weather, it was moved to the turf at the brand new D'Youville Athletic Complex.

Joanna Bardak (Amherst, NY/Amherst) led the Bengals offensively in game one. The left fielder finished 3 for 3 with a two-run homerun in the eighth inning that helped Buffalo State seal the win. Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) was 2 for 3 from the plate with two runs and Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) finished 2 for 4. Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park, Catholic Central) recorded the win the circle. The senior pitched all eight innings, allowing three runs on three hits and tallying five strikeouts.

The Cardinals were the first to get on the scoreboard in game one, tallying a run off an error. Buffalo State answered in the bottom of the inning. Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) ripped a triple to left center field, scoring Taylor Swiatek (East Aurora, NY/Orchard Park) and tying the game 1-1. Plattsburgh would regain the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bengals once again answered. Taking advantage of two errors by the Cardinals, Buffalo State scored two runs to take a 3-2 lead. The Cardinals managed to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh to push the game into extra innings. With two outs, Bardak stepped up to the plate and ripped a two-run home-run, her first of the season, to put the Bengals ahead 5-3. The Bengals defense held Plattsburgh hitless in the bottom of the inning to close out the game.

In the late game, Alexis Haley (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) pitched a shutout, throwing all seven innings with seven hits and two strikeouts. Novo paced the Buffalo State offense, finishing 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI. Jean Stahl (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) finished 1 for 2 with one RBI and Gorski was 1 for 3 with two RBI's.

Buffalo State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning and never looked back. The Bengals added two runs to their lead in the third and closed out scoring with two more runs in the fifth. Plattsburgh had a few opportunities to score, but were not able to get on the scoreboard.

After being hit by a pitch in each game, Kate Brownell (Batavia, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) has now tied the school record, set by her last year, for times hit by a pitch in a season with seven.

The Bengals return to action on Tuesday at home for a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Rochester starting at 3 p.m.
