POTSDAM, NY – Sarah Lorusso (Lakeview, NY/Frontier) scored four goals and tallied three assists to lead Buffalo State (2-5, 1-0 SUNYAC) to a 12-8 victory over Potsdam (1-6, 0-1 SUNYAC) in the conference opener on Saturday afternoon.
Lorusso led the offense, while Alanna Herne (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) added two goals and two assists. Kendra Thomas (Painted Post, NY/Corning West) and Meghan Farrell (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) also tallied two goals apiece. Rebecca Galanti (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and Alexis Wilensky (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) rounded out scoring with a goal each.
The Bengals found themselves down early as Potsdam scored two quick goals in the opening four minutes of play. Herne tallied Buffalo State's first goal at 25:16 and tied the game at two just under five minutes later. Farrell gave the Bengals the lead that they would not lose only 14 seconds after Herne's second goal. The Buffalo State offense settled in during the remainder of the half and the Bengals took a 9-4 lead into the locker room.
Despite getting outscored 4-3 in the second half, the Bengals were able to use their first half lead and three goals to seal the win over the Bears.
Potsdam finished with a 30-23 advantage in total shots, as well as an 18-13 advantage in ground balls and 13-9 advantage in draw controls.
Colleen George (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell) earned the win in net and made a season-high 12 saves.
Buffalo State returns to action on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. SUNYAC matchup at Geneseo.
