BUFFALO, NY – Buffalo State (12-11) split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Penn State Behrend (12-12) on Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-3 in game one before claiming a 5-2 victory in the late game.
Freshman Melissa Magiera (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) led the Bengals offensively in game one, finishing 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI. Joanna Bardak (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Taylor Swiatek (East Aurora, NY/Orchard Park) both finished 2 for 4 at the plate.
Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) recorded the loss in the circle. The senior pitched five innings with five hits, zero earned runs, three walks and five strikeouts. Alexis Haley (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) came in as a reliever for the final two innings, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Game one remained scoreless until the top of the fifth. The Lions took advantage of two big hits and a Bengal fielding error to take a 3-0 lead. Buffalo State quickly responded, however, tying the game up in the bottom of the inning. Magiera started things off with a home run to left field. Three batters later, Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) slammed a two-run home run to tie the game at 3-3. Penn State Behrend regained the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh and the Bengals did not have the answer in their final ups.
In the late game, Bardak finished 2 for 3 from the plate with two runs and one RBI, while Jordan Sarat (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) also finished 2 for 3 and added two RBI's. Novo, Swiatek and Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) each went 1 for 3 at the plate.
Sarat earned her third win of the season in the circle. She pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Buffalo State wasted little time in game two getting on the scoreboard. The Bengals used four hits to score three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, Buffalo State tallied three hits and took advantage of two Lion errors to push their lead out to 5-0. Penn State Behrend got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with two runs, but would not get runners in scoring position for the remainder of the game.
The Bengals are next scheduled to host New Paltz for a home conference doubleheader on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
