BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (14-11/8-4) raced to an 8-0 five-inning victory and then clawed its way to a 4-3 win in the late game to complete the sweep over visiting New Paltz (13-10/5-3) today in a SUNYAC doubleheader.
Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga/Depew) was 3 for 4 with a two-run home run that sealed the shortened victory in the bottom of the fifth inning of the opening game.
Taylor Swiatek (East Aurora/Orchard Park) finished 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs, and
Jenna Clarke (Brockport/Brockport) was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs.
Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park/Catholic Central) allowed just one hit in the circle for her fourth win of the season.
New Paltz committed five errors, including three in the first inning, and Buffalo State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The Bengals converted five hits and another error into a four-run third inning and the Novo's blast over the left field wall in the fifth ended the contest.
Novo stayed hot at the plate in the second game, going 2 for 3 with her sixth home run of the season. Swiatek also had another strong game, going 2 for 3, while
Jean Stahl (West Seneca/West Seneca East) was also 2 for 3 with a double.
Alexis Haley (Rochester/Aquinas) had an RBI double and also earned the win in the circle, pitching 4 1/3 innings of scoreless two-hit relief.
The Bengals fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first, but an RBI single by Swiatek put the Bengals on the board in the bottom of the frame. New Paltz regained the two-run lead in the third, but Novo's homer cut the deficit back to one. The Bengals then completed the scoring with a two-run fourth, including plating what proved be the winning run on a throwing error by the Hawks.
Buffalo State will host another SUNYAC doubleheader tomorrow against Oneonta beginning at noon.
