BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (15-12/9-5) and Oneonta (19-9/8-4) played a pair of lopsided five inning games today with the visiting Red Dragons prevailing in the first by a 9-1 count, before the Bengals roared back to claim an 11-1 victory in the late game.
Freshman
Danielle Szymkowiak's (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) first collegiate home run in the third inning accounted for all of Buffalo State's offense in the opening game, but it proved to be too little, too late. Oneonta plated two runs in the first, five in the second and two more in the third en route to the abbreviated victory.
The Red Dragons totaled 11 hits, compared to just three by the Bengals.
Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park/Catholic Central) was saddled with the loss, allowing six hits and seven runs (six earned) in 1 2/3 innings, before
Alexis Haley (Rochester/Aquinas) threw the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and two more runs.
Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga/Depew) was 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs in the late game for the Bengals, while
Joanna Bardak (Amherst/Amherst) added a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Szymkowiak also finished 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored.
Oneonta jumped out to an early lead again, plating a run in the top of the first, but Buffalo State erupted to score 10 runs on seven hits in the third inning. The Bengals brought 13 batters to the plate in the inning that culminated with a three-run home run by Novo to right center field. Haley ripped a three-run double earlier in the frame as well. The Bengals added one more run in the fourth and Haley cruised in the circle for the victory, allowing just three hits.
Buffalo State will host Geneseo for two more conference games tomorrow starting at noon.
