Softball Drops a Pair to Geneseo

BUFFALO, NY – Buffalo State's (15-14, 9-7 SUNYAC) comebacks fell just short in both games against Geneseo (20-9, 11-3 SUNYAC) as the Bengals fell 4-2 and 3-2 against the Knights in a SUNYAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

Joanna Bardak (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Taylor Swiatek (East Aurora, NY/Orchard Park) both finished 1 for 3 with a run in game one, while Kara Stein (Amherst, NY/Amherst) finished 1 for 3 with one RBI. Maddie Coneys (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) recorded the loss in the circle. The senior pitched five innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Alexis Haley (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) closed out the final two innings of the game, allowing two hits, zero earned runs and one strikeout.

The Bengals struggled offensively in the first matchup of the day, not recording a hit until the sixth inning. The Knights got on the board in the top of the third with a run and then added another run in the top of the fourth. In the seventh inning, Geneseo took advantage of two Buffalo State errors and extended their lead to 4-0. The Bengals managed four hits in the final inning. A single to right center from Stein scored Bardak for Buffalo States first run of the game. Two batters late, Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) walked with bases loaded and Swiatek came home to cut the deficit to two runs. However, the Bengals could not tally another run and fell 4-2.

Jean Stahl (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) finished 1 for 3 and scored a run to lead the Bengals in game two. Swiatek and Haley each went 2 for 4 at the plate. Jordan Sarat (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) recorded the loss in the circle, allowing two runs on two hits in two innings. Haley pitched the final five innings, allowing one run on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Game two was another low scoring matchup. Geneseo took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. The game remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Buffalo State tallied a run to cut the Knights lead to just one. Geneseo came back in the top of the seventh with three hits and added a run to go up 3-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Stahl scored from third after Bardak was caught stealing and Swiatek followed with a single ripped through the right side, but Buffalo State could not manage another run.

The Bengals are next scheduled to host the University of Rochester on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
