BUFFALO, NY – Buffalo State (4-12, 2-6 SUNYAC) stayed with No. 4 Cortland (15-1, 8-0 SUNYAC) early, but the Red Dragons used a 13-2 run to cruise past the Bengals 21-8 in the final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Coyer Field.
Freshman Alanna Herne (Tonawanda, NY/Tonawanda) led the Buffalo State offense with a six point performance off five goals and one assist. Meghan Farrell (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) tallied one goal and one assist, while Christina Krowel (Amsterdam, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Alexis Wilensky (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) both added a goal each.
Cortland was the first to get on the board with a goal at 27:49, but the Bengals quickly responded and tied things up at 25:24. Buffalo State was able to tie the game again, 2-2, with just over 22 minutes on the clock. A minute later, the Red Dragons tallied their third goal of the game to take back the lead they would not relinquish. Cortland began to pull away towards the end of the first half and took a 12-5 lead into halftime.
The Red Dragons opened up the second half with a 6-0 run and never looked back.
Colleen George (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell) recorded the loss in between the pipes, making 11 saves.
Buffalo State finishes sixth in the conference and will play at Geneseo on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. SUNYAC quarterfinal game.
