Women’s Soccer Shuts Down Brockport in SUNYAC Opener, 2-0

BUFFALO, N.Y.— The Bengals top two leading scorers, Melissa Smith (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) and Meghan Allen (Big Flats/Corning East), each tallied a goal to help Buffalo State open up SUNYAC play with a 2-0 shutout over Brockport at Coyer Field on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brockport had a chance in the opening minutes of the game to get on the scoreboard after a corner kick from Ashley Makowski connected with the leg of Christina Leonardo, but the shot was just wide.
  • Buffalo State quickly adjusted and took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute as Allen fought through a scramble in front of the net, punching the ball just inside the near post.
  • The Bengals nearly found themselves up 2-0 midway through the half after a free kick from Kristin Seiferth (Brightwaters/Bay Shore), but the shot was tipped just over the crossbar by an outstretched goalkeeper.
  • In the second half, the Bengals came out quick and determined.
  • Brockport was issued a red card in the 50th minute and Buffalo State took advantage of its man-up opportunity.
  • In the 10 minutes right after the Golden Eagle red card, the Bengals fired off five shots and did not let up offensively the rest of the game, outshooting Brockport 13-4 in the second half.
  • Smith scored an insurance goal for the Bengals in the 76th minute, collecting a header from Alexis Carillo (Pine Bush/Pine Bush) and ripping a shot that bounced off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net behind the Brockport goalkeeper.   
  • Buffalo State finished the game with a 21-9 advantage in total shots, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Bengals also finished with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Erica Knudsen (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) earned the win in net, recording her second career shutout with two saves.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Ashley Makowski and Christina Leonardo led the Golden Eagles with three shots each.
  • Goalkeeper Catherine Eliasson recorded the loss in net with seven saves.
