Buffalo State Men’s Basketball Loses to Geneseo, 79-72


BUFFALO, N.Y.— A late run by Buffalo State was not enough to get past Geneseo, as the Bengals fell 79-72 to the Knights in a SUNYAC matchup at home on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Michael Henry (Syracuse/W. Genesee) opened up scoring to give Buffalo State the lead in the first 20 seconds of play. The Bengals extended their lead out to six off a fast break layup from Nico McLean (Buffalo/Amherst) at 16:41, but four minutes later the Knights took over the lead and never relinquished it.
  • The game remained close through the first half and Geneseo had a five point lead, 34-29, heading into halftime.
  • In the second half, Geneseo took advantage of strong 3-point shooting to push its lead out 11 points, 53-42, with 13:48 left to play.
  • Midway through the period, the Knights went on a quick 8-0 run to go up by 17 points, 69-52.
  • Buffalo State managed to chip away at the Geneseo lead in the closing minutes of the game, coming to within six points, 77-71, with 43 seconds on the clock, but the Bengals ran out of time. Two free throws in the final eight seconds helped the Knights seal the win.
  • McLean led the Bengals on offense with 15 points. Jordan Chateau (Bayside/Lowell) added 14 points, while Lovell Smith (Buffalo/McKinley) chipped in 13 points and Henry tallied 11 points.
  • Buffalo State finished the game shooting 40.3 percent from the floor, 26.7 percent from the 3-point line and 77.8 percent from the charity stripe.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Justin Ringen led the Knights offensively, finishing 4-for-8 from the 3-point line and scoring 20 points all in the second half. John Decker added 16 points, while Charlie Zaepfel chipped in 14 points and Jordi Menkhorst pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
  • Geneseo finished the game shooting 45.9 percent from the floor, 40 percent from the 3-point line and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe.
