Women’s Hockey Sets School Record for Wins in a Season, Blanks Salem State, 6-0

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Sophomore Missy Mallon (Amherst, NY/Amherst) tallied her first collegiate hat trick and Buffalo State cruised past visiting Salem State, 6-0, today, setting a school record for wins in a season with 12 in the process.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mallon also added an assist. 
  • Emma Ruggiero (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart) had a goa and an assist, and Caitie Horvatits (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and Christine Harris (Mountain Top, PA/Wyoming Seminary) also scored.
  • Rachel Lenard (Orchard Park, NY/Nardin) continued to find her way to the scoresheet for the fourth-consecutive game since joining the team with three assists.
  • Horvatits opened the scoring with her second of the season just 36 seconds into the game.
  • Ruggiero's fourth of the year gave the Bengals a 2-0 lead before the first intermission.
  • Mallon scored a pair of goals in the second period, including a shorthanded tally, before netting her third of the game and fifth of the season midway through the third period. 
  • Harris scored her fourth of the season on the power play to complete the scoring in the closing seconds.
  • Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Arroyo) needed to make just 15 saves for her third shutout of the season as Buffalo State outshot the Vikings, 29-15.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Jenn Toussaint finished with 23 saves for Salem State.
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • Buffalo State is off to its best start in the history of the program at 12-3-0, already breaking the school record for wins of 11 set in 2000-01.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will return to ECAC West play at William Smith next Saturday and Sunday.
