Buffalo State Men’s Basketball Loses in OT at Plattsburgh, 98-91

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—  Buffalo State's six-game win streak was snapped on Saturday afternoon as Plattsburgh defeated the Bengals 98-91 in an overtime SUNYAC matchup.

        HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bengals opened up the game with two quick buckets in the first minute, but Plattsburgh responded with a 10-0 run to take a 14-6 lead at the 14 minute mark.
  • Buffalo State managed a run of their own to tie the game at 16-16 midway through the first half, but was unable to take back the lead.
  • Another run from the Cardinals gave them a 27-18 lead at 6:32.
  • In the closing minutes of the half, Plattsburgh continued to push on offense, taking a 16 point lead, but the Bengals managed to cut the Cardinals lead to 11, 46-35 heading into halftime.
  • Plattsburgh opened up the second half pushing out to its largest lead, 17 points, with 16:13 on the clock.
  • Buffalo State, however, slowly chipped away at the Cardinal lead. A seven minute stretch and a 22-6 run by the Bengals that included 10 points from Redell Freeman (Rochester/Bishop Kearny) and two key three's from Kevin Marmolejos (Woodhaven/Beach Channel) gave them their first lead of the second half, 73-72 with 5:48 to play.
  • The Bengals were able to push their lead out to six points with 1:58 left in the game, but the Cardinals hit two key jumpers, including a 3-pointer with seconds left to send the game into overtime.
  • In overtime, Buffalo State struggled to score and Plattsburgh took advantage. The Cardinals finished the five minute period outscoring the Bengals 12-5.
  • Marmolejos finished with a team-high 22 points and hit 6 of 12 attempts from the 3-point line. Nico McLean (Buffalo/Amherst) add 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Freeman also added 18 points. Rounding out double-digit scoring for the Bengals were Mike Henry (Syracuse/W. Genesee) with 17 and Lovell Smith (Buffalo/McKinley) with 10.
  • Buffalo State finished the night shooting 42.9 percent from the floor, 30 percent from long range and 57.6 percent from the free throw line.
     
    FOR THE FOES
  • Plattsburgh remains undefeated in conference play so far this season.
  • Jonathan Patron led the Cardinals on offense with 29 points. Kyle Richardson recorded 28 points and 13 rebounds, while Edward Correa added 19 points and Zack Coleman chipped in 10 points.
  • The Cardinals finished the day shooting 55.9 percent from the floor 40.9 percent from long range and 62.2 percent from the free throw line.

    Buffalo State will return to action at home on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. conference matchup against Brockport.
