Buffalo State Women’s Hockey Downs Canton, 7-4

CANTON, N.Y.— Erin Gehen (West Seneca/W. Seneca West) and Rachel Lenard (Orchard Park/Nardin) each tallied four points to help the Buffalo State tally a season-high seven goals and beat Canton 7-4 in a non-conference matchup on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bengals opened up the first period with a 2-0 lead as Maddie Toczek (N.Tonawanda/Starpoint) netted the first goal of the game at 9:14 and then 27 seconds later Emma Ruggiero (Amherst/Sacred Heart) followed with another.
  • Gehen tallied her first of two goals at 12:51 in the second period to extend the Buffalo State lead to three.
  • The Roos cut the Bengals lead back to two at the 15-minute mark, taking advantage of a power play opportunity.
  • Just over a minute later on a power play of their own, the Bengals went back up by three goals as Gehen netted her second goal of the game.
  • The third period proved to be a shootout with six goals scored between both teams.
  • Lenard, playing in her first game as a Bengal, tallied the team's second power-play goal of the game just 1:28 into play and another power play goal by Missy Mallon (Amherst/Amherst) at 11:10 put Buffalo State up 6-2.
  • In the closing minutes, Canton made a push scoring two quick goals at 14:40 and 16:01, cutting the Bengals lead back down to two goals, but it was the closest they would come.
  • The final Buffalo State goal by Ruggiero in the final 17 seconds of play sealed the game for the Bengals.
  • Megan Sackett (Williamsville/A.N. Myer (ON)) earned the win in net and recorded 16 saves.
  • Buffalo State finished the game with a 44-20 advantage in shots.
     
    FOR THE FOES
  • Rebecca DiNardo started and played 51:06, making 35 saves. Lillie Berisha finished the final 8:50 and tallied two saves.
  • Tess Adams scored three goals and one assists to lead the Canton offense.
