Softball Tallies Another Split In Florida

CLERMONT, Fla.— Buffalo State started off its fourth day in Florida with an 8-7 win over Scranton, but then fell 7-2 to a hard hitting St. Benedict team.
 
GAME 1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 8, Scranton - 7
LOCATION:  John Hancock Park – Clermont, Fla.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga/Depew) led the Bengal offense in the first game, going 2 for 4 from the plate with one run and two RBIs.
  • Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) also went 2 for 4 from the plate and added two runs. Laura Crooks (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield)) and Melissa Woods (Lakeview/Frontier) both finished 1 for 3.
  • Lexi Haley (Rochester/Aquinas) earned the win in the circle, coming in for relief, pitching the final four innings and allowing six runs on two hits. Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) pitched the first three innings, allowing five runs on two hits with three walks.
  • Scranton took advantage of three Buffalo State defensive errors in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Bengals answered back in the top of the next inning, exploding on offense with five runs on seven hits to go up 5-1.
  • The Royals, however, turned around and added four runs in the bottom of the inning to tie things at 5.
  • In the sixth inning, Buffalo State took back the lead, but once again Scranton answered to tie things up, 7-7, in the bottom of the inning.
  • Haley came up big for the Bengals, ripping a home run to center field in the final inning and the Buffalo State defense held the Royals scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Shanna Schaeffer and Shannon Stricker both finished 2 for 3 from the plate with two runs.
  • Morgan Rentzheimer recorded the loss in the circle, pitching the first four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

  • Chrissy Rennard (Brockport/Brockport) finished 2 for 2 from the plate with one run, while Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga/Depew) was 2 for 3 with one run.
  • Haley recorded the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits in seven innings pitched.
  • St. Benedict got on the board quickly, scoring a run after a passed ball. The Blazers added to their lead with another run in the bottom of the second.
  • Buffalo State tied things up in the next inning, as RBIs from Blujus and Jean Stahl (W. Seneca/W. Seneca East) made it 2-2.
  • The Blazers added two runs in the third and sixth innings, and one run in the seventh while holding the Bengals scoreless through the final five innings for the win.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Nico Nelson led the St. Benedict offense, finishing 2 for 3 from the plate with two runs.
  • Kiela DeVlaeminick earned the win in the circle, allowing just two runs on 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
 
UP NEXT
After a day off, Buffalo State returns to action on Saturday with a 9 am matchup against Tufts and a 1 pm rematch against St. Benedict.
