Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Utica for First Win of Season, 17-11

UTICA, N.Y.— Elyse Stark (Lido Beach/Long Beach) made 14 saves and Christina Krowel (Amsterdam/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) tallied five goals to lead Buffalo State to its first victory of the season, defeating host Utica, 17-11, today in a non-conference game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Krowel and Alanna Herne (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) paced an efficient Bengals' offense that scored 17 times on just 20 shots on goal.  Krowel finished with five goals and two assists, and Herne had four goals and five assists.
  • Sarah Lorusso (Lakeview/Frontier) added four goals and an assist, while Kyra Thompson (Massena/Salmon River), Morgan Hogue (Painted Post/Corning), Johna Kjerstad (Baldwinsville/CW Baker), and Ally Ruggieri (Brockport/Brockport) also scored for Buffalo State.
  • Stark had 14 saves and allowed 10 goals for the win, before being relieved by Megan Doyle (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) for the final two minutes.
  • Utica took an early 2-1 lead, but the Bengals responded with eight of the game's next nine goals to take a lead it would never relinquish. 
  • The Pioneers closed the first half with a 3-0 run to trail just 9-6 at the intermission, but the Bengals pulled away again in the second half pushing the advantage to 16-8 before coasting to the win.
  • Utica outshot Buffalo State 34-27 overall and 25-20 on goal.
  • The Pioneers also had a 31-23 advantage in ground balls, a 17-12 edge in draw controls, and an 18-12 advantage in turnovers. 
  • Stark produced 14 saves, however, compared to just three by the Utica goalkeepers.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Rebecca Plunkett led Utica with four goals.
  • Katlyn Scarpinella scored three times, Amanda Chruscicki had a pair of goals and Courtney Wheeler and Mary Stuhlman scored once each.
