Softball Falls to Roanoke, No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan to Open Season

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.— After more than a month of practicing in the gym, Buffalo State finally opened its season today at the Beach Blast Tournament in Virginia Beach, falling to Roanoke 6-1 in the opener, and then 13-0 in five innings against host No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan in the late game.
 
GAME 1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Roanoke – 6, Buffalo State - 1
LOCATION:  Princess Anne Complex – Virginia Beach, Va.
RECORDS: Roanoke (5-2), Buffalo State (0-1)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State fell behind 2-0 in the top of the third and then cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Laura Crooks (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) that scored Julia Blujus (Amherst/Amherst) who reached on the first of her two hit by pitches in the game.
  • Crooks finished 1 for 3 at the plate.
  • Roanoke scored four runs on four hits in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.
  • Buffalo State finished with five hits.
  • Lexi Haley (Rochester/Aquinas) drew the loss in the circle, scattering eight hits with four strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nationally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan showed why it is No. 7 in the nation, taking control early, plating three runs in the first, seven in the second and three more in the third en route to the shortened victory. 
  • The Marlins produced 15 hits, while the Bengals were held without a hit and left just two runners on base in five innings.
  • Jordan Sarat (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) started for Buffalo State, allowing nine runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings.  Haley threw the finals 3 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Mary Shipp and Alana Peters combined for the no hitter with just one walk.
  • Blake Henderson was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a home run and a double.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will wrap up the Beach Blast tomorrow, facing Frostburg at 10 a.m. and Baruch at noon.
