Softball Sweeps Second Day at Beach Blast, Tops Frostburg, Baruch

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.—Buffalo State bounced back on the second day of the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast today, winning a pair of games, dropping Frostburg, 5-2, and defeating Baruch, 7-1, with a combined no-hitter.
 
GAME 1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 5, Frostburg - 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State's bats came to life in the morning game against Frostburg, converting 10 hits into five runs.
  • Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga/Depew) finished 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
  • Laura Crooks (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga/Depew) was also 2 for 4 with a run scored.
  • Lexi Haley (Rochester/Aquinas) tossed a complete-game win, allowing just three hits.
  • Frostburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the first inning, but Novo's two-run double in the second evened the score.  The Bengals then added three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Renay Aubel was 1 for 2 with a two-run homer for the Bobcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) and Jordan Sarat (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) combined to toss a no-hitter in the second games.  Adams earned the win in her first collegiate start, going four innings, allowing just one run with three walks and three strikeouts.  Sarat threw the final three shutout innings, giving up just two walks with four strikeouts.
  • The Bengals produced seven runs on six hits by six different players, while also drawing five walks and a hit by pitch.
  • Baruch opened the scoring on a wild pitch in the first, but the Bengals took control from there.  After scoring two in the second, Haley belted a two-run home run in the third and the Bengals added three more runs in the fifth. 
  • Chrissy Rennard (Brockport/Brockport) had a double and an RBI, and Gorski was also 1 for 2 with an RBI.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Cassandra Lagana took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will next head down to Clermont, Fla. for a 12-game set beginning on Sunday, March 20 against Salve Regina and Western Connecticut.
