Softball splits battle with Fredonia

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State produced 25 hits in 12 innings, but could only manage a split today against visiting Fredonia, winning 13-3 in five innings and then falling 3-2 despite registering 12 hits in the late game.
 
GAME 1 BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga/Depew) and Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) each homered to power the Bengals' offense.  Novo's solo shot came on the first pitch in the bottom or the first inning, while Szymkowiak finished 2 for 3, including the two-run home run in the six-run third inning.
  • Lexi Haley (Rochester/Aquinas) was 3 for 4 with an RBI and earned her 10th win of the season in the circle, scattering five hits and allowing three unearned runs.
  • Julia Blujus (Amherst/Amherst), Melissa Woods (Lakeview/Frontier) and Chrissy Rennard (Brockport/Brockport) added two hits apiece for Buffalo State.
  • The Bengals, who finished with 16 hits and capitalized on five Fredonia errors, scored a run each in the first and second innings, before blowing things open with six in the third and five in the fourth.
  • Fredonia plated all three of its runs in the fourth inning on three hits and one error.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Sarah Cuillo finished 2 for 3 with an RBI.
  • Erika Whitney took the loss, allowing eight hits and seven runs (four earned) in 2 1/3 innings.  Aldyn Carlson gave up five hits and six runs (one earned) in the final 1 2/3 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Haley continued to swing a hot bat for Buffalo State, going 3 for 4 with an RBI. 
  • Woods finished 2 for 3, and Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga/Depew) and Laura Crooks (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) were both 2 for 4.
  • Jordan Sarat (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) was unlucky on the mound yet again, suffering the loss, giving up eight hits and just one earned run with three strikeouts.  Sarat has allowed three or fewer runs in each of her last five starts, but has only gotten 11 total runs in support.
  • Fredonia opened the scoring in the second inning after an error kept the inning going, the Blue Devils plated two runs on a double to centerfield that was lost in the sun.
  • The Bengals answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and then tied the score in the fifth on Haley's RBI single.
  • Fredonia scored the winning run in the seventh inning with a two out double followed by a single up the middle.
  • Buffalo State outhit Fredonia, 12-8, but committed three errors, compared to none by the Blue Devils.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Erin Mushtare was 3 for 3 with a double, a triple and a run scored.
  • Khee Nance was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
  • Emily Shellenberger earned her third win of the season in the circle, allowing 12 hits and just two runs.
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • Fredonia preserved its three-point lead in the "Battle by the Lake" with each school taking one point.  The Blue Devils now lead 14.5-11.5.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will continue its homestand tomorrow with another SUNYAC twin bill against Potsdam starting at noon.
