Softball finds consistency in sweep of Potsdam

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State produced consistent offense, plating 14 total runs in a two-game sweep over visiting Potsdam, winning 7-4 and 7-0 today in a SUNYAC twin bill.
 
GAME 1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 7, Potsdam - 4
LOCATION:  Softball Field – Buffalo, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chrissy Rennard (Brockport/Brockport) and Melissa Woods (Lakeview/Frontier) paced the Bengals' bats in the first game, each going 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
  • Jean Stahl (W. Seneca/W. Seneca East) was also 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) went 1 for 2 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Jordan Sarat (Caledonia/Caledonia-Mumford) earned the win, but needed to be taken out with a medical issue after 4 2/3 innings.  She allowed five hits and three runs (two earned).  Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) struck out three and allowed one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
  • Potsdam opened the scoring with a run on an error in the first inning, but the Bengals answered with the game's next seven runs.  They scored three in the second and two in the third and fourth innings.
  • The Bears hit a three-run home run on Adams' first pitch in the fifth, and managed to get the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but grounded out to end the game.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Katie Marsman was 2 for 4 with the three-run home run for Potsdam.
  • Sami Hubinski suffered the loss, allowing nine hits and seven runs in four innings.  Alissa McCauley threw the final two innings of scoreless relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lexi Haley (Rochester/Aquinas) cruised to her 11th win of the season, with a complete-game, five-hit shutout.
  • Haley and Julia Blujus (Amherst/Amherst) both went 2 for 3 with a run scored, and Blujus also had a pair of stolen bases.
  • Laura Crooks (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) was 2 for 4 and scored three times, and Rennard had a double and three RBIs.
  • Buffalo State jumped ahead early and blew the game open with a five-run fifth inning in which the first six batters reached safely.  The inning was highlighted by a two-run single by Woods and a three-run double by Rennard.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Jordan Ott and Brooke Falsion had two hits each for Potsdam
  • Potsdam used three pitchers in the game with Meghan Dougherty taking the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in three innings of work.
