Fredonia rallies past Women’s Lacrosse, Sinks Bengals’ ‘Battle’ hopes

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Alanna Herne (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) scored seven goals, but Buffalo State could not hold a three-goal second-half lead as visiting Fredonia came back to record an 11-10 victory today at Coyer Field.  With the win, Fredonia clinched the 2015-2016 Battle by the Lake all-sports competition between the two schools.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Herne factored in eight of the Bengals' 10 goals, running her season scoring total to 54 goals and also added an assist.
  • Sarah Lorusso (Lakeview/Frontier) chipped in a goal and two assists, and Cassie Saint-Vil (Middletown/Middletown) added a goal and an assist.
  • Christina Krowel (Amsterdam/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) also scored for the Bengals.
  • Buffalo State broke a 5-5 halftime tie early in the second frame and pushed the lead to 10-7, but did not score again in the final 13:29.
  • Fredonia scored just over a minute later and then added three goals in a span of 1:45 with the last being the game-winner with just 3:36 remaining, before running out the clock.
  • Fredonia outshot Buffalo State 33-18 for the game and held a 16-7 advantage in draw controls.
  • Elyse Stark (Lido Beach/Long Beach) made three saves and allowed five goals in the first half, and Megan Doyle (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) surrendered six goals while making nine saves.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Audrey Yokopovich led Fredonia with five goals and one assist.
  • Katie Miller tallied two goals and two assists, and Samantha Spiess and Juliana Kotas also scored twice each.
  • Nicole Burrows made six saves in the win.

Buffalo State will conclude its season at home this Saturday against SUNY Canton at 3 p.m.
