Softball keeps pace in playoff race with split at Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y.—Buffalo State used a seven-run sixth inning to earn a 9-5 victory over host Geneseo in the first half of today's twin bill before the Knights cashed in on a pair of big innings for a 13-5 five-inning victory in the night cap.
 
GAME 1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 9, Geneseo - 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Geneseo outhit Buffalo State 15-8 in the first game, but Lexi Haley (Rochester/Aquinas) and Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga/Depew) both blasted three-run homers as part of a seven-run sixth inning to pace the Bengals to the victory in the opening game.
  • Haley also earned the win in the circle, striking out nine.
  • Novo finished 2 for 3 with a double, the three-run blast and five RBIs.
  • Sarah Gorski (Cheektowaga/Depew) was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs score.
  • The Bengals opened the scoring when Novo hit a two-run double in the third inning.
  • Geneseo scored in the bottom of the third and then took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the fifth, before Buffalo State plated seven runs on five hits and one error in the sixth. 
  • The Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but stranded a pair of runners in both the sixth and the seventh innings. 
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Danni Napoli was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Claire VanNewkirk was 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Abby Dennett was also 3 for 4. 
  • Mikayla Moore took the loss, allowing six hits and six earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) went 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI, but the Bengals could not keep up with Geneseo in the late game. 
  • Cassandra O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) was 1 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs.
  • Buffalo State struck first in the opening frame, but Geneseo blew the game open with a grand slam as part of a seven-run third inning and then put the game out of reach with six more runs in the fourth.
  • The Bengals tried to extend the game plating three runs in the fifth, but could not come any closer.
  • Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) took the loss, giving up 12 hits and eight earned runs.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Napoli had a grand slam, and Emily Martin was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Taylor Moore earned the win, throwing 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will close out the SUNYAC regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader at Brockport starting at noon.  The Bengals are currently tied with Oswego for the sixth and final playoff position.  The Lakers play at Oneonta tomorrow.
