BROCKPORT, N.Y.—Buffalo State fell 5-4 against Brockport in today's opening game, but responded behind a two-hit shutout by
Lexi Haley (Rochester/Aquinas) in the late game to clinch a SUNYAC playoff berth with a 9-0 six-inning victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stephanie Novo (Cheektowaga/Depew) paced the Bengals' bats in the opening game, going 2 for 4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs.
- Laura Crooks (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) also had a pair of hits, and Haley was 1 for 2 with a home run and two walks.
- Haley also drew the loss in the circle, despite allowing just six hits and striking out seven.
- Four of Brockport's six hits came in the first inning as the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
- The Bengals outhit Brockport 9-2 the rest of the way, but could not climb all the way back.
- Chrissy Rennard (Brockport/Brockport) had a run-scoring double in the third, and Novo hit a two-run shot in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3.
- After Brockport added a run in the sixth, Haley hit a leadoff solo homer in the seventh, but the Bengals were retired in order after that.
FOR THE FOES
- Lindsay Wachna finished with an RBI and two of Brockport's six hits.
- Jamie Berger earned her 13th win of the season, allowing nine hits and striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Haley continued where she left off in the circle in the late game, cruising to a two hit shutout with just one walk and three strikeouts for her 14th win of the season. She also went 2 for 4 at the plate with four RBIs and her second home run of the day.
- Novo was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored, and Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) was also 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.
- The Bengals had 10 hits in the six-inning game and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Buffalo State added a run in the second, three more in the fourth, and then sealed the game with two more in the sixth.
FOR THE FOES
- Kelsi Nau took the loss for Brockport, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs.

Buffalo State has cancelled its doubleheader tomorrow against Ithaca. The Bengals will open the double-elimination SUNYAC Championship as the No. 6 seed against top-seeded host Cortland on Thursday at 9 a.m.
