Geneseo Edges Women’s Lacrosse, 9-8

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State scored twice in the final minute, but could not complete the comeback, dropping a 9-8 decision to visiting Geneseo in a SUNYAC game today on a cold and wet Coyer Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alanna Herne (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) led the Bengals' offensively with three goals and two assists, and Christina Krowel (Amsterdam/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) also scored three times. 
  • Sarah Lorusso (Lakeview/Frontier) added a goal and two assists, while freshman Morgan Hogue (Painted Post/Corning) added her fifth goal of the season.
  • Geneseo opened an early 4-1 lead, but the Bengals battled back to even the score at 4-4 at halftime.
  • The Knights appeared to seize control of the game in the second half, scoring the first four goals of the period and opening up an 8-4 advantage with 9:52 remaining. 
  • The Bengals responded again, however, cutting the deficit in half before Geneseo pushed its lead to 9-6 with 3:50 remaining. 
  • Krowel's 27th of the year with 54 seconds left, and Herne's 36th with 36 seconds remaining cut the deficit to just one.
  • Geneseo corralled the ensuing draw control, but the Bengals forced a turnover and generated one last rush, but time expired before they could muster a potential game-tying shot.
  • The Bengals finished with a 22-20 advantage in shots and committed just 13 turnovers, compared to 20 by Geneseo.  Buffalo State also had a 17-11 edge in ground balls.
  • Elyse Stark (Lido Beach/Long Beach) made five saves in the loss for Buffalo State.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Lauren Corbett and Liz Felix scored twice each for the Knights, while Kathleen DePillo, Erin Down, Erin Cregan, Maddie Lee and Hannah Millich also scored.
  • Claudia Coleates made nine stops in goal for Geneseo.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will host New Paltz on Friday at 2 p.m. in a game that has been moved up from Saturday due to cold weather in the forecast.
