Women’s Hockey trips Williams, 2-1

BUFFALO, N.Y.- Erin Gehen (W. Seneca, NY/W. Seneca West) and Rachel Lenard (Orchard Park, NY/Nardin) gave Buffalo State a two-goal lead and the Bengals held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting Williams in a non-conference class this afternoon at the Ice Arena.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State – 2, Williams - 1
LOCATION: Buffalo State Ice Arena – Buffalo, N.Y.
RECORDS: Buffalo State (8-4-1), Williams (6-5-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State controlled play for much of the first period and took a 1-0 lead when Brooke Krantz (Penticton, BC/Penticton) forced a turnover and Gehen made a nifty move off the half wall and followed her own rebound for her 10th goal of the season.
  • Buffalo State extended the lead to 2-0 early in the second frame as Rachel Lenard (Orchard Park, NY/Nardin) picked off a pass from a Williams defender and lifted the puck over the keeper's shoulder on a breakaway for her fourth goal of the year.
  • Williams began to shift the momentum from there and finally broke through in the final minute of the second period on a deflected shot from the point.
  • Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Arroyo) held strong between the pipes for Buffalo State the rest of the way, however, finishing with 24 saves, including 11 in the final frame.
  • Williams finished with a 25-23 advantage in shots on goal for the game.

FOR THE FOES
  • Sara Lehman netted her fifth goal of the season for the Ephs.
  • Christina Cleroux made 21 stops in the loss.

NOTEWORTHY
  • Gehen continued her ascent on Buffalo State's all-time scoring list, moving into a tie for second with Nikki Kirchberger with 62 points.  She also moved into third on the school's all-time goal scoring list with 34.
  • Buffalo State will close out the regular season with 12-consecutive ECAC West games after today's final non-conference contest.
