Geneseo stuns No. 13 Men’s Soccer in SUNYAC Quarters, 2-0

BUFFALO, N.Y.-Nationally-ranked No. 13 and third-seeded Buffalo State saw its 15-game unbeaten streak come to an end today in the SUNYAC quarterfinals, as it suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of visiting sixth-seeded Geneseo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Geneseo broke through in an evenly matched first half with the game's first goal in the 44th minute on a breakaway off a short through ball.
  • Buffalo State began to press in the second half and Ali Shawish (Lackawanna/Lackawanna) produced a chance on a bicycle kick in the 66th minute that sailed high.
  • Luke Pavone (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) followed up with a consecutive quality chances, striking the left post with a blast in the 69th minute and then was foiled with a diving save on a penalty kick less than a minute later.
  • Geneseo added an insurance marker just four minute later on a one-time shot off a cross from the right wing and held on for the two-goal win.
  • Buffalo State finished with a 16-15 edge in shots in a game that was played on the edge in the second half.
  • Andreas Queen (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley) finished with six saves for the Bengals.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Isaac Sanabria had a goal and an assist for the Knights, and Nick Keneally also scored.
  • Dillon Medd made five stops, including the save on the penalty kick to preserve the shutout for Geneseo.
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • Buffalo State saw its consecutive-shutout streak come to an end at 601 minutes and 21 seconds.
