Softball drops two to end Spring Break Trip in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla.— Buffalo State ended its Spring Break Trip with two losses, falling to Southern Maine in the opener, 11-3, and to Middlebury in game two, 11-2, in five innings.
 
GAME #1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Southern Maine – 11, Buffalo State – 3
LOCATION:  – Clermont, Fla. (Legends Way Fields)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Abijah Adams (Rochester/Greece-Arcadia) finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored.
  • Melissa Woods (Lakeview/Frontier) went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
  • Laura Crooks (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Cassandra O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) each hit 2-for-4, with O'Hern contributing an RBI.
  • Allie Block (N. Tonawanda/Starpoint) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, as she went five innings allowing four runs (two earned) with one strikeout.
  • Buffalo State got on the board first in the bottom of the opening inning.  O'Hern singled up the middle, driving in Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) to put the Bengals up 1-0.
  • Southern Maine responded with two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead. 
  • The Huskies added a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to go ahead 5-1.
  • Buffalo State battled back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on RBI-singles by Adams and Woods to cut the deficit to 5-3.
  • Southern Maine answered with a six-run seventh inning and held the Bengals scoreless in the bottom half to claim the 11-3 victory.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Mary Caron (3-for-5), Courtney Davis (2-for-5) and Brooke Cross (1-for-3) all drove in two RBIs. 
  • Alexis Brown picked up her second win of the season, throwing 4.2 innings of six-hit ball, allowing just one run (zero earned) with three strikeouts.
  • Haeli Campbell picked up her first save of the year, closing out the last 2.1 innings of the game.



GAME #2 BASICS
FINAL SCORE:  Middlebury -11, Buffalo State – 2 (5 Inn.)
LOCATION: Clermont, Fla. (Legends Way Fields)
RECORDS: Middlebury (2-2), Buffalo State (4-12)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Szymokowiak, O'Hern and Crooks were the only Bengals to record hits in the shortened game.
  • Buffalo State again found itself ahead 1-0, getting an RBI single by O'Hern in the top of the first.
  • Middlebury answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
  • Szymokowiak got the game tied at two in the top of the second with an RBI-triple down the right field line.  She was thrown out at home in a close play as she attempted the inside-the-park homerun. 
  • The wheels fell off for the Bengals in the bottom half of the inning as the Panthers scored six runs to retake an 8-2 lead.
  • Middlebury got three more in the fourth, and held Buffalo State scoreless over the remainder of the game to close out the 11-2 win.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Taylor Gardner finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Melanie Mandell also went 2-for-3 while driving in one run and scoring twice.
  • Sarah Freyre hit 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Irene Margiotta picked up her first win of the year, throwing five innings of three-hit ball.  She allowed two earned runs and had five strikeouts.

The Bengals hop on a plane to return to Buffalo later this evening.  Buffalo State next plays at Oswego in its first SUNYAC doubleheader of the season on Friday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
