Geneseo edges Men’s Basketball in tight contest, 79-76

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Buffalo State rallied with a 10-6 run in the final 2:35, but a costly offensive foul with five seconds left proved to be the difference as Geneseo escaped with a 79-76 victory over the host Bengals in SUNYAC action this evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sheldon Adams (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) led all scores with a game-high 23 points on 7 of 7 shooting from the charity stripe, including 6 of 6 in the final minute of the contest.
  • Jordan Christopher (Bronx/Mott Haven Campus) posted his seventh career double-double, and third in his previous four games, with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Aaron Davis (Beacon/Beacon) chipped in 10 points and a team-high eight assists, while Kay Grant (Jamaica/Thomas Jefferson) added seven points and five rebounds.
  • Buffalo State and Geneseo traded points for most of the first half, until a late jumper by Adams gave the Bengals a 36-33 edge at halftime.
  • The Bengals maintained the slim margin for the opening minutes of the second stanza until a 12-2 run by the Knights gave Geneseo a 54-48 lead with 12:10 left.
  • Buffalo State rallied to trim the deficit to 58-57 on a fast-break layup by Christopher with 7:51 left.
  • The Knights scored 15 of the next 24 points to claim a 73-66 lead with 2:35 remaining.
  • The Bengals used a combined eight made free throws by Adams and Davis to cut the lead to 78-76 with 18 seconds remaining.
  • After a turnover on the in-bounds play by Geneseo, Buffalo State had a final shot to send the game into an overtime session waved off due to an offensive foul with only five seconds remaining.
  • Buffalo State shot 42 percent from the floor and held a 38-31 edge in rebounding en route to outscoring the Knights 15-4 in second-chance points.
  • Geneseo shot 56 percent from the field and held a slim advantage in both points off of turnovers (20-19) and bench points (19-16).
