As Buffalo State celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, the athletics department will spotlight a moment from its history each week during the fall semester.
You might remember the great performances at halftime of our two home football games by the Buffalo State Cheerleaders this year, but did you know that cheerleading has been at Buffalo State for even longer than football. At Buffalo State, cheerleading has been around since the 1940s and has become much more than just a spirit program for our football and basketball teams. The cheerleading team won three consecutive SUNYAC Championships from 1998-2000, and has taken on an even greater competition schedule in the last few years. The Bengals finished first at the 2019 Road to Daytona Competition and fifth at the national championships.
In the spring of 2022, Buffalo State cheerleading will compete many times, including hosting a Showcase in Buffalo in March. Exact dates are still being determined, so stay tuned to find out when you can do the cheering for our cheerleading team!
Special thanks to the Archives & Special Collections Department of SUNY Buffalo State for their help with research for this project.Â
