Men's Soccer Falls 3-2 to Hobart in Double Overtime

GENEVA, NY – The Buffalo State men's soccer erased a two goal first half deficit with two goals in the first two minutes of the second half, but a double-overtime golden goal by the Statesmen gave Hobart a 3-2 victory on Wednesday evening.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Jamal Belarj (Medford, NY/Longwood) scored twice for the Bengals to tie the game.
  • Theo Pencic (Oslo, Norway/Heltberg) and Anthony Roncone (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) each chipped in assists for Buffalo State.
  • Dylan Guarino (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) made 12 saves in a losing effort.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Statesmen took a 1-0 advantage in the 11th minute off a corner kick, when Sam Lescher booted the cross into the top left corner of the net.
  • Hobart doubled their lead in the 31st minute when Lescher added his second goal of the game, heading a cross past Guarino
  • The Statesmen took the 2-0 advantage into halftime.
  • Buffalo State needed fewer than two minutes into the second half to even the score after making multiple personnel changes at the break.
  • In the 46th minute, Theo Pencic connected with Jamal Belarj off a corner kick to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
  • Less than one minute later, Belarj scored his second of the game as he slotted a left-footed shot into the right corner of the net off a beautiful pass from Anthony Roncone.
  • Pencic was denied on a free kick shot by a great save by the Hobart goalkeeper in the 55th minute.
  • Each team had some quality chances in the final 35 minutes of regulation, but the goalkeepers kept the score tied with some great saves by each.
  • Hobart had the best chance of the first overtime period, but Michael O'Connor Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East) stepped in front of a Statesmen cross to deny a great opportunity.  
  • With 3:24 left on the clock, Hobart struck for the game winning goal, as Connor Koschineg blasted a right-footed shot just beyond the reach of Guarino for the victory.
     
FOR THE FOES
  • Lescher scored his two goals on two shots for Hobart.

Buffalo State will wrap up the SUNYAC regular season this weekend at Geneseo on Friday and at Brockport on Saturday.
