Men's Soccer Loses 2-1 to Geneseo in Double-Overtime

GENESEO, NY – The Buffalo State men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to SUNYAC foe Geneseo in double-overtime on Friday afternoon. A defensive miscommunication in the final seconds proved costly for the Bengals, as the hosts Geneseo capitalized to score the game-winning goal. Even with the defeat, other results in conference play allowed the Bengals to clinch a postseason berth.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Musa Abdulla (Lackawanna, NY) scored the lone goal for Buffalo State, and had three of the Bengals' five shots on goal.
  • Moe Saif (Lackawanna, NY/Coppell, TX) provided the assist on the goal.
  • Geneseo outshot Buffalo State 21-11 and held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
     
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Goalkeeper Max Shoemaker (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) made four saves in the first half, and Geneseo held the Bengals without a shot on goal in the opening fourty-five minutes.
  • Saif made a great defensive play to in the 65th minute to prevent a potential breakaway opportunity for Geneseo
  • Buffalo State took a 1-0 advantage in the 70th minute as the Knights' goalkeeper was unable to corral a long-distance shot by Saif, and Abdulla pounced to knock the rebound into the back of the net.
  • Geneseo began to turn up the pressure in the next five minutes, sending two shot attempts just over the crossbar.
  • In the 79th minute, Geneseo tied the score on a header off a cross from the left side.
  • With 20 seconds left in the second half, Saif blasted a last-ditch effort from long range just over the net, and the clock ran out in regulation.
  • Shoemaker made a solid save to keep the game tied, and defender Trevor Moreland (Newfane, NY/Newfane) made a goal-line clearance to keep things even in the first overtime period.
  • With under a minute remaining in the second overtime period, Joe Vogt sent a long pass in between a Buffalo State defender and Shoemaker. The Bengal pair seemed to think the other was going to deal with the danger, but Tyler Lewandowski sprinted in and chipped the game-winning goal into the back of the net.

  • Lewandowski and Adam Astarita scored the goals for the Knights.
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will wrap up the SUNYAC regular season tomorrow against Brockport. The Bengals currently sit in fourth place in the SUNYAC standings with 13 points, and could move up to third place, or fall to as low as sixth place depending on the results of the final day of conference regular season play.
