Volleyball Splits Matches at St. John Fisher Tournament on Saturday

PITTSFORD, NY —The Buffalo State volleyball team split a pair of matches at the St. John Fisher tournament on Saturday afternoon, defeating Rochester in five sets, and falling to St. John Fisher in three sets. 
 
MATCH ONE BASICS 
FINAL SCORE: Buffalo State 3, Rochester, 2 
SET SCORES: 18-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 15-11 
LOCATION: Bobby Wanzer Court – Pittsford, NY 
RECORDS: Buffalo State (11-11), Rochester (6-17) 

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE 

  • Samantha Coakley (Lockport, NY/Lockport) led the Bengals with eight kills. 

  • Liz Schultheis (Holley, NY/Brockport) added seven kills and seven blocks.  

  • Jenna Hugenschmidt (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) led Buffalo State with 18 digs and three aces.  

  • Riley Domin (Getzville, NY/Williamsville South) handed out 22 assists in the match.  

 
HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Bengals scored the first point of the opening set, but Rochester tied the score on the next play, then never trailed the rest of the opening set.  

  • Leading 17-15 in the second set, Buffalo State scored eight of the final 11 points to take the set and even the match. 

  • The Yellow Jackets raced out to a 13-7 lead in the third set. Buffalo State responded with a three-point run to cut the deficit to three, but Rochester won 12 of the final 19 points. 

  • Things didn't look great for the Bengals in the fourth set, before a massive run helped them turn around the match. Trailing 20-12, Buffalo State scored 13 of the final 14 points, thanks to serving runs by Hugenschmidt and Destinee Norman (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) 

  • Two aces by Myah Platler (Syracuse, NY/Solvay) and a pair of kills by Coakley helped the Bengals jump out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth set. Buffalo State was able to withstand a mini rally from the Yellow Jackets to win the match.  

 
FOR THE FOES 

  • Ella Sokolowski tallied 13 kills to lead Rochester. 

  • Ana Cerezer had a game-high 25 digs to lead the defense.

  • Eden Harrison (Eldersburg, MD/Century) tallied nine kills against the Cardinals. 

  • Domin, Norman, and Hugenschmidt each had two aces in the match.  

 
HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Cardinals raced out to a 13-1 lead in the first set. The Bengals rallied to within 24-22, but St. John Fisher scored the final point of the set.  

  • Buffalo State used an 8-1 run to tie the score at 10-10 in the second set, but the Cardinals won nine of the next 11 points on the way to taking the set 25-17. 

  • The beginning of the third set was back-and-forth. Tied at 18-18, St. John Fisher won the final seven points to win the match.   

 
FOR THE FOES 

  • Alea Steigerwald tallied 12 kills and a .310 hitting percentage in the victory.

The Bengals have a SUNYAC Quarterfinal match at third-seeded Brockport on Tuesday evening.
