Potsdam scores late as women's soccer falls 3-2

BUFFALO, N.Y.— A last-second shot by Alexis Hults (Schenevus, N.Y./Schenevus) floated just over the goalpost as time expired, as an 85th minute goal by Potsdam's Mackenzie Bowie proved to be the difference in a 3-2 decision, in SUNYAC action from Coyer Field on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

LOCATION:  Coyer Field – Buffalo, N.Y.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Erin Valente (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) tallied her third goal of the game to break Buffalo State's five-game scoring drought.
  • Maya Campbell (Albany, N.Y./Albany) tallied her first career goal.
  • Bella Vene (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) made nine saves in the decision.
  • The Bengals are 16-10 all-time against the Bears, having lost four in a row after winning 15 consecutive matches from 2002-2016.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Potsdam opened the scoring in the 10th minute, as Makenna Crosson sent a cross to her sister Margaret, whose sliding shot got past Vene into net.
  • Buffalo State struck back in the 13th minute, as Macey Gioeli (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) was fouled making a long run into the 18-yard box. Valente took the penalty chance high and to the right, far away from Potsdam goalie Savannah Bowie.
  • Potsdam took the lead in the 37th minute, as Emily Metz found Sarah Emmi on a long pass. Emmi's shot from about 20 yards out went low past the keeper.
  • Campbell tied things up with her first career goal in the 37th minute. Battling in a scrum in front of net, Campbell got past a pair of Postdam defenders and the goalkeeper, firing a shot into the open net.
  • Postdam took the lead in the 85th minute, taking advantage of a free kick opportunity 12 yards out on the far side of the field. Meghan Sardi took the free kick, firing the pass to the feet of Bowie, who tapped the chance past the near post.
  • Buffalo State took a corner with seconds remaining in the game, as Gioeli's pass ricocheted off the head of Heather Moriarty (Mount Morris, N.Y./Keshequa Central) to the feet of Hults, who kicked the chance just over the crossbar as the buzzer sounded.
