Women's basketball drops season opener at Rochester

Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y.— The Buffalo State women's basketball team returned to the hardwood for the first time in 620 days, falling to the University of Rochester by a 91-55 score Tuesday evening.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Katie Villarini (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) led the Bengals with 25 points and two assists, shooting 7-for-22 from the field and 10-for-11 from the free throw line.
  • Tashawni Cornfield (Gowanda, NY/Putnam) was solid in her Bengals debut, tallying 10 points and six rebounds. She also drew four charges in the first half.
  • Zavia Jaime (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford Senior) added eight points, going 4-of-6 from the charity stripe.
  • Heaven Rollek (Springville, NY/Springville-Griffith) tied for the team lead with six rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State took an early lead in the first quarter, thanks to four Cornfield points. 
  • The Bengals led by as many as four points, after a Villarini 3-pointer gave the squad a 13-9 lead.
  • Rochester ended the opening quarter with a 13-3 run, as they held a six-point, 22-16 lead after one.
  • Rochester stretched its lead into double digits midway through the second, as a Haley Dumiak layup gave the Yellowjackets a 30-20 lead.  
  • Rochester pushed even further, as they led by 20 (50-30) at the half.
  • Down 65-43 in the third quarter, the Bengals went on a 5-0  spurt to end the quarter as they trailed by 17.
  • The Yellowjackets outscored the Bengals by a 26-7 margin in the fourth quarter to pull away for the 36-point win.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Dumiak led all Yellowjacket scorers with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field.
  • Four other Yellowjackets scored in double figures: Hannah Lindemuth (13), Kat Jenks (11), Maura Leverone (10), and Charlotte Adler (10).
  • The Yellowjackets shot 44.6 percent (37-of-83) from the field and out-rebounded the Bengals by a 60-41 margin.
 
UP NEXT
The Bengals will play their first home game since Feb. 25, 2020 as Hilbert comes to the Buffalo State Sports Arena this Saturday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
