GAME ON! Softball returns to action for first time in 23 months, falls twice at St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y.— When Buffalo State wrapped up its 2019 season against New Paltz, nobody could have known the Bengals would not play another game for 693 days.  The long wait finally came to an end today, when just taking the field felt like a victory, despite dropping both halves of a doubleheader at nationally-ranked No. 12 St. John Fisher, falling 9-1 in five innings in both contests.
 
GAME 1 BASICS
FINAL SCORE:  No. 12 St. John Fisher – 9, Buffalo State – 1 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State opened the scoring on a Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo/Kenmore West) first-inning double that scored Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) who reach on an error, but the Bengals would not score again.
  • The Cardinals plated nine runs on 12 hits in four offensive innings.
  • Carli Bogue (Elba/Elba) took the loss in her first appearance as a Bengal, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 2 1/3 innings.  Makena Adams (Randolph/Frewsburg) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Emily Trotman scattered four hits in five inning of work and struck out five.
  • Rachel Evans hit a two-run homer and four other Cardinals finished with four hits apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State produced seven hits in the late game, but could only plate a single run on a Caitlyn Parsons (Webster/Webster Thomas) RBI single in the fifth inning.
  • Hannah Kwasniewski (Blasdell/St. Mary's) finished 2 for 3, and Castello was 1 for 2 with a double and a run scored.
  • Castello took the loss in the circle, pitching three innings, surrendering 11 hits and eight runs.  Bogue pitched the final inning of relieve allowing one run and one hit with one strikeout.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Megan Kreger led the Cardinals going 2 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs. 
  • Trotman and Sammie Torlish also homered for Fisher.
  • Jess Patterson pitched five innings for the win, striking out seven.
 
Buffalo State will open its home schedule on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader against Houghton starting at 3 p.m.
