FREDONIA, N.Y.—Buffalo State needed just six innings to defeat host Fredonia 9-1 in today's opening game, but dropped the second half of the doubleheader by a 3-2 count in eight innings.
GAME 1 BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Fredonia scored first in the opening game, plating a run in the third inning, but the Bengals' bats came to life, scoring three runs in each the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
- Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) cruised in the circle, tossing a three-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks. She was also 2 for 4 with two triples, an RBI and two runs scored.
- Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo/Kenmore West) was also 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.
- Savannah Sirico (Mount Marion/Saugerties) was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster/Lancaster) was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run.
FOR THE FOES
- Katie Yudin took the loss for Fredonia, allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits in 4 1/3 innings, while Vaness Galbraith pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, surrendering four runs on five hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Buffalo State opened the scoring in the nightcap with a home run by Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) to lead off the second inning and extended the lead to 2-0 later in the frame with an RBI single by Hannah Kwasniewski (Blasdell/St. Mary's).
- Fredonia cut the deficit in half with a run in the fourth and then evened the score with a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- After stopping the Bengals in the top of the eighth, the Blue Devils won the game in the bottom of the inning. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, a sacrifice bunt moved the lead runner to third and she scored on a walk-off sacrifice fly to center field.
- Kwasniewski was 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Castello was the only other Bengal with multiple hits, also going 2 for 4.
- Carli Bogue (Elba/Elba) took the hard-luck loss, allowing just six hits in the complete-game effort.
FOR THE FOES
- Yudin earned the win for the Blue Devils, tossing 2 2/3 innings of no-hit, scoreless relief. She was also 3 for 3 with a run scored.
- Maria Cavirus was 1 for 2 with a pair of RBIs, including the game-winner.
Buffalo State will next host Oswego for another SUNYAC doubleheader on April 14.
