Late Penalty Powers Men's Soccer Past St. John Fisher 1-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y.— Theo Pencic (Oslo, Norway/Heltberg) slotted home a penalty kick in the 78th minute for the only goal in a 1-0 victory for the Buffalo State men's soccer team on Tuesday evening.

INSIDE THE BENGALS BOX SCORE 
  • Pencic made his only shot of the night count, calmly finishing from the penalty spot.
  • Musa Abdullah (Lackawanna, N.Y/Homeschooled) led the Bengals with four shots on goal 
  • Max Shoemaker (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) made six saves to earn his third shutout of the season. 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The game was chippy from the beginning, with a total of seven yellows, four for the Bengals and three for the Cardinals.
  • Solid passing between Hosa Omar (Buffalo, N.Y./Lackawanna) and Zak Shaibi (Buffalo, N.Y./McKinley) allowed the Bengals to break through the St. John Fisher defense on the way to creating the penalty kick opportunity for the Bengals.
  • Shaibi fed a through ball to Moe Saif (Lackawanna, N.Y./Coppell (T.X.) down the right sideline, who made a move towards goal before having his heels clipped by a defender just inside of the box.
  • Pencic stepped up to the spot and finished to the left as the goalkeeper dove the other way.
  • The Bengals held on in the final minutes as the Cardinals pushed for an equalizer. 
  • Buffalo State outshot St. John Fisher by a 18-9 margin, and the Bengals had nine shots on goal to six for the Cardinals.  
  
FOR THE FOES 
  • Justin Bonetto had three shots on goal for the Cardinals. 
  • Goalkeeper Jaden Schlierf stopped seven shots in a losing effort.
