BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo State women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought contest to visiting Houghton College by a 3-0 score Tuesday evening.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOXSCORE
  • Sophomore forward Macey Gioeli (N. Tonawanda, N.Y./N. Tonawanda) and senior Erin Valente (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) led the Bengals with five and four shots, respectively.
  • Junior goalkeeper Bella Vene (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) made one save in the first 45 minutes.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Kaufman (Cheektowaga, N.Y./West Seneca East) made four saves in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bengals almost struck first in the 11th minute, as a Gioeli shot on a 1v1 situation was knocked away by Houghton goalkeeper Megan Merrifield after a solid pass by Valente.
  • Valente grabbed the rebound, but her shot was stopped by Merrifield.
  • A Buffalo State own goal put Houghton on the board in the 25th minute, as a corner chance by Sarah Potocki was headed into the crossbar by a Bengal defender. The referee called it a goal after review.
  • Valente almost evened the score in the 35th minute, but her chance from inside the penalty box hit the crossbar.
  • Houghton upped its lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute as Sierra Dibble broke past the defenders on the right side, finishing low past Kaufman.
  • Houghton finished the scoring in the 82nd minute, as Anna Kalivoda finished a loose ball into the open net after a scramble.
FOR THE FOES
  • Dibble led the team with six shots, scoring the aforementioned goal.
  • Houghton outshot the Bengals by a narrow 19-16 margin.
  • Merrifield made seven saves in net to preserve the victory.
UP NEXT
The Bengals finish their season-long, six-game home stand next Wednesday, hosting Alfred University from Coyer Field at 6 p.m.
