BUFFALO, N.Y.— The Buffalo State volleyball team returned to SUNYAC action but were unable to slow a red-hot Cortland team, fighting valiantly in a 3-0 sweep at the Buffalo State Sports Arena Friday evening.

- Freshman outside hitter Angelina Scichilone (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) led the team with nine kills, hitting a cool .333.
- Junior defensive specialist Jenna Hugenschmidt (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) earned a career-high 21 digs, adding two assists.
- Sophomore setter Riley Domin (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville South) tallied 15 assists.
- The Bengals out blocked the Red Dragons, 9-7, with senior outside hitter Liz Schultheis (Holley, N.Y./Brockport) and sophomore hitter McCartney Geartz (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) each assisting on four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bengals raced out to an 8-4 lead in the opening set after tallying five straight points. A 3-0 run would give the Bengals a 12-7 lead.
- Cortland stormed back, going on an 8-0 run to take a 15-12 lead.
- The Red Dragons won three of the final four points to close the first set.
- Once again, the Bengals began the second set with an 8-5 lead, after going on a 4-0 run.
- Cortland came back, taking a 17-14 lead after a 12-6 run.
- The Red Dragons would close the set with an 8-4 edge.
- The third set was nip-and-tuck, with Cortland and Buffalo State trading points.
- This time, it was Cortland who jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set.
- The Bengals stormed back with another 4-0 run, reducing the deficit to one after three consecutive Cortland attack errors.
- Cortland extended the lead to three (11-8), before Buffalo State went on another run, scoring three in a row to tie the set at 11.
- Kills by Scichilone and and Geartz a block by Geartz and Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) gave the Bengals a two-point, 18-16 lead.
- The Bengals would extend the lead to three, at 21-18.
- Cortland got hot, going on a 7-1 run to close the match.
FOR THE FOES
- Hannah Southcott led the Red Dragons with a 19-kill, 11-dig double-double, hitting .395.
- Carly Haegele led the defense with 28 digs.
- Ryan Hinshaw paced the Cortland offense with 22 assists.
- Cortland extends its streak of consecutive sets won to 15, winning their fifth match in a row.
