Volleyball Shakes Off Slow Start to Defeat Oswego State in Three Sets

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State volleyball overcame a slow start in the first set, and finished strong for a three-set sweep of SUNYAC foe Oswego State at the Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Liz Schultheis (Holley, NY/Brockport) had 10 kills on 25 attempts without an error for a .400 hitting percentage.
  • Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) chipped in nine kills with a .500 hitting percentage.
  • Jenna Hugenschmidt (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) led the Bengals defense with 10 digs. Five players had seven or more digs for Buffalo State as the Bengals held Oswego State to a .104 hitting percentage.  
  • Riley Domin (Getzville, NY/Williamsville South) handed out 16 assists, while Abby Verner (Ransomville, NY/Trinity) added 11 assists in the victory.  
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State trailed for nearly the entire first set and had their backs against the wall down 24-19. The Bengals fought off five consecutive set points for the Lakers, and forced a 25-25 tie. A kill by the libero Hugenschmidt off the top of the block and a service ace by Alena McKelvey (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) that rattled the top of the net and tumbled to the floor gave Buffalo State a 27-25 victory.
  • Trailing 5-3 in the second set, the Bengals won 10 of the next 11 points to open a 13-6 lead. The Lakers went on a run of their own to close the gap to 14-12, but a perfectly placed Hugenschmidt kill halted the run. Buffalo State finished the set winning 11 of the final 15 points, capped by a thunderous kill by Angelina Scichilone (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East).
  • Buffalo State jumped out to a 9-3 advantage in the third set and rolled to victory as Domin closed out the match with her third service ace of the day.
  • Buffalo State had a team hitting percentage of .232 for the entire match compared to .104 for the Lakers. Buffalo State's defense steadily improved throughout the match, holding Oswego State to .053 and .031 hitting percentages in the final two sets.  
 FOR THE FOES 
  • Cara Simplicio tallied 10 kills to lead the Lakers, while Dana Carey had 17 assists in the defeat.
UP NEXT
Buffalo State continues SUNYAC conference play next weekend when they head to the North Country to face Potsdam on Friday night and Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon.
