Men's Soccer outlasts Clarkson in 1-0 road victory

POTSDAM, N.Y.— Zak Shaibi (Buffalo, N.Y./McKinley) powered home a 79th minute goal, as Buffalo State men's soccer team ended the North Country trip with a 1-0 victory over Clarkson University Sunday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BENGALS BOX SCORE 

  • Shaibi tallied his first goal of the season in the 79th minute. 

  • Shaibi led the team with four shots, while Anthony Roncone (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East), Agastya Dharamarj (Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy), and Theo Pencic (Oslo, Norway) each added a shot. 

  • Max Shoemaker (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) made one save in the victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Bengals nearly tallied a goal as a well-placed through ball towards Jamal Belarj (Medford, N.Y./Longwood) was parried by Clarkson keeper Ian Donahue outside the penalty box. 

  • Another solid opportunity for the Bengals came in the 28th minute, as a Pencic shot was parried away by Donahue. 

  • Clarkson upped the pressure throughout the second half, resulting in a number of chances at net.  

  • The Bengals countered one of Clarkson's chances in the 79th minute, as Shaibi received a low pass from Pencic on the right side. Shaibi danced past two defenders, moved left and finished right with the left foot past Donahue. 

  • The Golden Knights had two final chances at a goal in the final 20 seconds on a free kick and resulting corner opportunity, but the Bengal defense stymied Clarkson as time expired. 

  • Clarkson out shot Buffalo State by a 11-7 margin, but the Bengals had three shots on goal to the Golden Knights' one.

  • James Nicholas led the Golden Knights with three shots, one on goal. 

  • Donahue made two saves in the decision.

The Bengals will head to Fredonia to compete in the Fredonia Classic Sept. 10-11, beginning with a matchup against Houghton College on Friday at 1 p.m.
