Women's Basketball Holds Off Plattsburgh for 60-53 Win

BUFFALO, NY — The Buffalo State women's basketball team raced out to a double-digit halftime lead, and withstood a furious fourth quarter comeback for a 60-53 victory over Plattsburgh on Wednesday afternoon at the Sports Arena.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
  • Tashawni Cornfield (Gowanda, NY/Putham) led Buffalo State with 17 points.
  • Adiya Jones (Washington, DC/McKinley Technology) just missed out on her first conference double-double of the season, recording nine points and 11 rebounds.
  • Katie Villarini (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) added 14 points, and handed out six assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With Buffalo State leading 9-8 early, the Bengals went on a 10-3 run to close the quarter, with Cornfield leading the way with eight points in the quarter.
  • The Bengals extended the lead to as many as 14 early in the second quarter, before the Cardinals cut their deficit down to eight with under a minute remaining in the half.
  • A Villarini layup in the final seconds restored the Buffalo State lead to 10 points at halftime.
  • Five straight Buffalo State points to open the second half gave the Bengals a 40-25 lead, but Plattsburgh battled back to within five points late in the quarter thanks to a Mya Smith 3-pointer.
  • Jadyn Jones (Gowanda, NY/Lake Shore) and Adiya Jones made consecutive layups as the Bengals closed the third quarter with a 53-44 lead.   
  • A 9-2 Plattsburgh run to open the fourth quarter made the score 55-53, before Cornfield drained a step-back 3-pointer for a five-point lead with four minutes remaining.
  • From that point, the Buffalo State defense stiffened, holding the Cardinals scoreless in the final four minutes for a 60-53 victory.
FOR THE FOES
  • Payton Couture had a team-high 13 points for the Cardinals.

The Bengals head out to the North Country this weekend for more SUNYAC action. Buffalo State faces off against Plattsburgh on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Potsdam on Sunday at 12 p.m.
