CORTLAND, NY – The SUNYAC track and field championships are next weekend, but Cortland and the Buffalo State men's basketball team got started a bit early as both defenses were tested in a 103-90 loss in SUNYAC action Friday night.

- Philbert Weekes (Brooklyn, NY/Lafayette) once again had a strong showing with his seventh consecutive double-double, a 24-point, 16-rebound effort on 12-of-16 shooting from the field.
- Aaron Davis (Beacon, NY/Beacon) hit four 3-pointers, scoring 18 points and adding seven assists.
- Marquell Boutwell (Liverpool, NY/Nottingham) and Tyron Smith (New York, NY/Thurgood Marshall) each added 13 points off the bench.
- Buffalo State had its best shooting output of the season, making 50.7 percent (37-of-73) of its shots, and making 43.5 percent (10-of-22) of its shots from downtown.
- The Bengals also outrebounded the Red Dragons by a 39-28 margin.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cortland jumped out to an early 11-2 lead, before the Bengals answered to reduce the deficit to four (13-9) after a Boutwell layup.
- The Red Dragons got hot from downtown, hitting four consecutive 3-pointers, en route to a 21-6 run.
- Cortland would lead by as many as 24 points (62-38) in the opening half.
- The Red Dragons shot 64.9 percent (24-of-37) and hit 11 threes to take a 64-41 lead after one.
- The Bengals started the second half with a flurry, as Weekes scored eight points of a 10-0 run, bringing the lead down to 13 (64-51).
- Cortland pushed ahead once again, leading by 22 points (86-64) at the 10-minute mark.
- Buffalo State responded once again, this time with a 20-10 run to bring the deficit to 12.
- Cortland would hold that lead, as both teams continued to trade baskets until the end.
FOR THE FOES
- Austin Grunder led all scorers with 34 points, adding seven rebounds, and three blocked shots.
- Kareem Lubin added 17 points and seven rebounds.
- Riley McEvoy scored 12 points off the bench.
- The Red Dragons shot 56.1 percent (37-of-66) from the field, and hit 16 3-pointers.
