Softball comes up short on day three in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – A late inning rally fell just short for the Buffalo State softball team in the second game on Monday, as the Bengals fell to Union by a 6-5 score on Monday. The Bengals dropped the first contest against Luther by a 10-3 score.
 
GAME 1 BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Luther struck with a first inning run, but the Bengals responded with two runs in the second, and one in the third, to take a 3-1 lead.
  • The Bengals held Luther in check until the fourth inning, when the Norse sent eight runners home to take a 9-3 lead after four.
  • The Norse added a run in the sixth and finished things off in the seventh for the victory.
  • The Bengals tallied six hits in game one and committed three errors.
  • Oriana Castello (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet) led the team with two hits. She also took to the circle in relief, allowing two runs (none earned) in three innings pitched.
  • Sam Schafer (Depew, N.Y./Lancaster) drove in two runs, going 1-for-3.
  • Olivia Carr (West Falls, N.Y./East Aurora) took the loss (0-2), allowing five earned runs on eight hits in three innings pitched.
FOR THE FOES
  • Luther tallied 10 hits in the game, and also committed three errors.
  • Maggie Hogenson, Abby Spore, and Belle Berg each tallied two hits.
  • Sam Thompson picked up her fifth win of the season (5-1) with a complete-game effort, allowing no earned runs on six hits, striking out two batters.

  • RBI knocks by Karson Saunders and Olivia Valery gave Union a 2-0 lead after one inning.
  • The Dutchwomen added two more in the fourth, taking advantage of a defensive miscue.
  • Union starter Jessie Rooney flummoxed the Bengal batters, working a no-hitter through four innings.
  • Deme Kellogg (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) broke the no-no bid after a leadoff walk by Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster), ripping a double down the left field line as pinch runner Elyse Crimi (Williamsville, N.Y./Sweet Home) scored from first.
  • 'State got the second run off a defensive miscue at third base, as Kellogg scored from third.
  • After a Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) single, Caitlyn Parsons (Webster/Webster Thomas) ripped a triple down the left field line, scoring both Castello and Benton as the game was tied at four.
  • Union added two crucial runs in the sixth, as Saunders went deep to left field, the ball clipping over the fence for a two-run home run.
  • Buffalo State battled back late, as Parsons ripped another RBI double to bring the deficit to one.
  • With the tying run in scoring position, Union catcher Nahnny Sobetzko dove in foul territory for the game-ending out.
  • Parsons finished the afternoon a home run short of the cycle, finishing 3-for-4.
  • Benton went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • Carli Bogue (Elba, N.Y./Elba) took the loss (1-2), allowing four earned on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched, striking out two.
  • Carr allowed just one hit over the final 1 2/3 innings.

  • Rooney earned the victory in a complete-game effort (3-1), allowing two earned runs off of six hits, striking out three batters.
