Softball responds with a pair of victories in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Buffalo State softball team made the most of its three games played on Wednesday, with victories against SUNY Cobleskill and The University of Chicago sandwiched around a contested loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Bengals defeated Cobleskill by a 7-3 score, then fell late to Wisconsin-Whitewater by a 7-4 score, before recovering with a 3-2 victory over Chicago.

GAME 1 BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bengals snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory, but it wasn't easy at first as Cobleskill began the contest with a first inning run off an Alexis Miranda RBI single.
  • Buffalo State responded in the bottom of the frame. Oriana Castello (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet) scored on a Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) ground out.
  • Buffalo State scored twice in the second thanks to a Cobleskill error, and Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West) knocked in an RBI single up the middle to give the Bengals a 4-1 lead after three.
  • In the fifth, Sophia Graczyk (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors) tallied her first collegiate RBI, as she drove in Meghan Baio (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) on an infield single.
  • Sam Schafer (Depew, N.Y./Lancaster) then drove in two in the sixth, as the Bengals took a 7-1 lead.
  • Cobleskill scored two runs in the seventh, but reliever Ella Susi (Lakeview, N.Y./Frontier) shut the door with a flyout to left field, ending the game.
  • Susi picked up the win in relief, the first of her career, (1-0) after allowing two earned through 4 2/3 innings pitched.
  • Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) led the Bengals in hits, going 2-for-2 with a run scored.
FOR THE FOES
  • Miranda led Cobleskill with three hits, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
  • Victoria Decker took the loss (0-2), allowing two earned runs over five innings pitched, striking out two batters.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first inning, the Warhawks struck first on a Sophia Kinjerski two-out, RBI single to center.
  • A leadoff triple by McIntosh in the fourth set the stage for an Abigail Kruse (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) RBI single up the middle, tying the game at one.
  • The Warhawks took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a two-out, run-scoring single.
  • The Bengals battled back once again, as Wolinski knotted things up at two with a one-out double to the center field warning track, scoring Castello.
  • With the game tied at two heading into the seventh, UW-Whitewater broke things open with a five-run frame, taking a 7-2 lead.
  • Buffalo State kept fighting to the end, beginning the seventh with a Caitlyn Parsons (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) RBI single.
  • Two batters later, Kruse struck again with an RBI single over the glove of the shortstop, as Wolinski came home to reduce the deficit to 7-4.
  • The Bengals had the tying run at the plate on two occasions, but Warhawks reliever Rhiann Dick induced a pop-up and a groundout to end the game.
  • Carli Bogue (Elba, N.Y./Elba) took the hard-fought loss (1-3), holding Whitewater at bay until the seventh inning. She finished with two strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings pitched, allowing five earned on 12 hits.
  • Kruse went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Wolinski finished with a 2-for-4 effort.
FOR THE FOES
  • Dick picked up the victory in relief (1-2), allowing two earned on three hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
  • Whitewater tallied 13 hits, led by a 3-for-5 performance by Grace Wickman.
 
GAME 3 BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bengals immediately settled into the final game with a first inning run as Parsons pushed a two-out single through to the right side.
  • Chicago responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
  • Buffalo State starter Olivia Carr (West Falls, N.Y./East Aurora) kept Chicago in check the rest of the way, keeping them off the board after the first inning runs.
  • The Bengals finally tied the game in the fifth, as Benton scored Savannah Sirico (Mount Marion, N.Y./Saugerties) from third after Sirico tallied a one-out triple to center field.
  • In the top of the seventh, Sirico pushed a one-out single over the head of the third baseman.
  • After a Castello single advanced Sirico to third, a wild pitch in the next at-bat sent her home, giving the Bengals a 3-2 lead.
  • Solid fielding finished the job, as Carr induced a trio of tough groundouts to third, second, and short to clinch the victory.
  • Carr (1-2) went the distance, allowing just two earned runs on five hits, striking out three batters.
  • Sirico, Kruse, and Benton each tallied two hits.
FOR THE FOES
  • Paige Heffke took the hard-fought loss (2-3), allowing three earned runs in seven innings pitched, striking out eight.
  • Paige Zvokel led the Maroons with a 2-for-3 performance.

Weather permitting, the Bengals will take on Trinity College for a single game on Thursday, beginning at 9:45 a.m. If inclement weather cancels the Thursday game, the Bengals will then wrap the Florida trip with morning matchups against Centre and Colby.
