Softball Opens Conference Play at Home this Weekend

Bengals host Oswego Saturday, Cortland Monday

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo State softball team is set for the opening weekend of SUNYAC play. The Bengals host doubleheaders against Oswego on Saturday and Cortland on Monday. Saturday's games will be the Sandra Hollander Memorial Games, as Buffalo State will honor former Head Coach Sandra Hollander, who passed away on April 2, 2012.

EYES ON THE BENGALS
 
-Buffalo State enters the weekend with a 3-9 overall record after a stretch of 12 games in seven days at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.
 
-Reining 2021 SUNYAC Julie Lenhart Co-Player of the Year Oriana Castello (Pearl River, NY/Nanuet) has continued to perform early in the season. Castello leads the Bengals with 14 hits, is second with a .375 batting average, and is also 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts this year.
 
-Abigail Kruse (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) and Caitlyn Parsons have combined to drive in 16 of the 39 runs batted in by Buffalo State this season. Parsons leads the Bengals with a .378 batting average and .541 slugging percentage, while Kruse is hitting .344, and has the team's lone home run.
 
-Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) leads the conference with five doubles this season.
 
 
A LOOK AT THE LAKERS
 
-Oswego is 3-8 overall after splitting a doubleheader against RIT last Thursday.
 
-Fiona Higgins has pitched to a 0.83 earned run average through 42 innings. Her 64 strikeouts lead the SUNYAC, more than two times as many as any other pitcher in the conference.
 
-In Lakers offense averages just 1.6 run per game, worst in the SUNYAC. However, the pitching staff has dealt to a 2.82 earned run average, the second-best in the conference.
 
THE HISTORY
 
Buffalo State is 48-14 against Oswego since 1990, and the Bengals have also won two straight against the Lakers. Kayla Wolinski drove in four runs to lead Buffalo State to a 11-3 victory in the last meeting of the teams in 2021.
 
RESEARCHING THE RED DRAGONS
 
-Cortland sits at 7-7 overall after splitting a pair of games on Sunday, a 6-5, 10-inning, victory over Ursinus, and an 8-0 loss to Salisbury.
 
-Halle Wright leads the SUNYAC with a .500 batting average, .694 slugging percentage, and 14 runs batted in.
 
-Cortland has played just five seven-inning games this year, and the Red Dragons haven't completed a regulation contest in six games, playing two extra-inning games and four competitively shortened games in that time.
 
THE HISTORY
 
Cortland is 71-26 against Buffalo State since 1991. The Red Dragons defeated the Bengals in the 2021 SUNYAC Semifinal series, two games to one, last season, winning the final two games after Buffalo State came away with a win in the series opener.
