SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The The SUNYAC released its weekly honors on Monday afternoon, and senior goalie
Janae Nelson (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) of the Buffalo State lacrosse team was honored as the PrestoSports Women's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week. The award recognizes the most outstanding defensive player in the conference for games contested in the week beginning March 4.
Nelson made an impressive 29 saves over the two contests, which included a career-best 25 saves against Plattsburgh on Saturday. She also added 10 ground balls, which broke a Buffalo State record set by
Cassie Saint-Vil in 2017. The 25 saves were one short of the program record, which was last set by
Stefani Mitchell against RIT and Fredonia in the 2000 season.
In the two games, both Buffalo State victories, Nelson saved 69 percent of shots faced and allowed just 13 goals. For the season, the senior sports an 11.13 goals against average and 70 saves for a .443 save percentage in nine starts.
Buffalo State (5-4, 1-2 SUNYAC) won both games last week, taking down Mount Aloysius by a 19-7 score, then won its first conference contest with a 13-8 victory over Plattsburgh State. The Bengals will host Oswego on Wednesday at 4 p.m. from Coyer Field, before hitting the road on Saturday with a visit to Oneonta, beginning at 10 a.m.
