Softball erases deficit, tops Fredonia to salvage split

Bengals defeat Blue Devils 8-6 in game two, fall 5-4 in game one

BUFFALO, N.Y. – A pair of four run innings lifted the Buffalo State softball team as it was able to salvage a split against rival Fredonia on a wet and windy Friday afternoon. The Bengals defeated the Blue Devils 8-6 in game two after a 5-4 game one loss.

INSIDE THE BENGALS BOX SCORE
  • The Bengals won after trailing by five runs for the second time in four games.
  • Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) hit her first home run of the season, going 1-for-4.
  • Oriana Castello (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet) led the team with three hits, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After two hitless innings, Fredonia tallied four consecutive hits in the third, including a Nicole Kumro grand slam home run, taking a 4-0 lead.
  • A two-out double in the fourth inning gave the Blue Devils a 5-0 lead.
  • Benton led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a shot to left center 0-1 pitch, clearing the wall for her first home run of the season and ninth of her career.
  • After a pair of singles by Abigail Kruse (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) and Wolinski, Parsons tallied the Bengals' second run with a hit to the shortstop, who couldn't beat the throw home as Kruse scored from third.
  • Jenna Wlostowski (Lancaster, N.Y./Alden) scored another run on a groundout, before Meghan Baio (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) came through with a two-out, RBI double to complete the four-run inning.
  • Fredonia increased its lead to 6-4 after a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
  • Castello led the fifth with a single, advancing to second on a wild pitch.
  • Three batters later, Wolinski once again brought the Bengals to within one with a double off the left field wall, scoring Castello.
  • Parsons singled in the next at-bat, tying the game at six with a looping single over the glove of the shortstop.
  • Kellogg then gave the Bengals the lead, striking for an RBI double down the left field line, then scoring from second after the throw to second base skipped into the outfield.
  • The two-run lead was enough for Carr, who kept Fredonia off the board to earn the win.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Amber Piniewski went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • Kumro tallied five RBI in the game.
  • Emily Chelius dropped to 6-11 overall, giving up seven earned runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched.

  • Chelius tied the game at three for Fredonia with an RBI single in the seventh.
  • Bengal miscues put runners on for Alyssa Santiago, who gave the Blue Devils a 5-3 lead with an RBI double.
  • Wolinski struck again in the seventh, scoring Kruse with a one-out, RBI double to center field.
  • Chelius then forced Kellogg and Wlostowski to pop out to end the threat.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Chelius won her sixth game of the year with a complete-game effort, striking out six batters.
  • Amber Piniewski led Fredonia with two hits.
