Softball outlasts Medaille in extras, earns Tuesday sweep

Bengals defeat the Mavs 9-3 and 5-3

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo State softball team broke out with three runs in the 11th inning in game two, eventually finishing off a doubleheader road sweep of Medaille on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. The Bengals defeated the Mavericks by a 9-3 score in game one, then outlasted the Mavericks 5-3 in game two.

INSIDE THE BENGALS BOX SCORE
  • Ella Susi (Lakeview, N.Y./Frontier) took the circle for her first career start and was spectacular. She allowed no earned runs on five hits in 11 innings pitched, striking out four and walking just one to improve to 2-0.
  • Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) went 3-for-5, driving in a run with a double in the 11th inning, which proved to be the game-winner.
  • Oriana Castello (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet), Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West), and Abigail Kruse (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) each went 2-for-5, with Castello and McIntosh driving in runs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a scoreless first seven innings for both teams, but both teams had scoring opportunities in the fourth inning.
  • In the top of the fourth, the Bengals had a pair of runners on, before an inning-ending double play by the shortstop.
  • In the bottom of the fourth with a runner on third, Medaille's Camryn Adimey hit a liner to Sam Schafer (Depew, N.Y./Lancaster), as she corralled the ball to end the threat.
  • The Bengals also had two runners in scoring position in the sixth inning after a passed ball, but McIntosh flied out to left field to end that threat.
  • In the eighth, with the international run rule activated, the Bengals struck first, after a Jenna Wlostowski (Lancaster, N.Y./Alden) groundout scored Deme Kellogg (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) from third.
  • The Mavs tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a double down the left field line.
  • The Bengals and Mavs traded runs again in a contested ninth inning, as McIntosh broke through with a two-out, RBI single and a fielder's choice by Brenna Fenstermaker with two outs.
  • In the 11th with the game tied at two, consecutive doubles by Castello and Benton gave the Bengals a 4-2 lead.
  • A McIntosh groundout to the shortstop scored the third run, as the Bengals led 5-2.
  • Medaille got one back on a Kylie Lyons leadoff double, but were unable to get any further as Susi forced a groundout to end the game.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Gabby Presutti went 2-for-4 with a walk, run scored, and run driven in.
  • Alexis Alguire took the loss, dropping to 5-4 after allowing three earned runs in 10 2/3 innings pitched.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Castello factored into the first three Bengal runs, manufacturing a run on an error, steal, and a Wolinski grounder in the first, then sent an RBI triple into right field in the second inning.
  • Later in the inning, Wolinski knocked an RBI single into right field, scoring Castello.
  • The Bengals finished the three-run second the hard way, as Caitlyn Parsons (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Benton.
  • Medaille got one back in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to center field.
  • Benton added to the Bengal lead in the third, with a two-out, RBI double to left field.
  • Medaille struck for two runs in the fifth, as the Bengals held a 5-3 lead.
  • The Bengals broke the game open in the sixth, beginning with run-scoring efforts by McIntosh, Sophia Graczyk (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors), and Kellogg.
  • A double steal by Kellogg and Kruse was successful, as Kruse scored to finish a 4-run inning and a 9-3 lead.
  • Bogue kept Medaille off the board in the final two frames, retiring the Mavs in order in the seventh.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Sydney Cooper went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Doherty drew three walks.
  • Alguire took the game one loss, allowing three earned in a complete-game effort, striking out five batters.

The Bengals will return to SUNYAC competition this weekend, beginning with a Friday trip to Oneonta. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
