Lacrosse to honor seniors in Saturday’s tilt vs Plattsburgh

BUFFALO, N.Y. – It's SUNYAC contests the rest of the way for the Buffalo State lacrosse team, as the Bengals begin the stretch run with a Saturday home contest against Plattsburgh. The contest will begin at 1 p.m. from Coyer Field. The Bengals will honor seniors Liz Schultheis (Holley, N.Y./Brockport) and Janae Nelson (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) before the contest.

BREAKING DOWN THE BENGALS
  • Buffalo State enters the weekend with a 4-4 record, and are looking for their first SUNYAC victory with an 0-2 conference record.
  • The Bengals defeated Mount Aloysius in their last matchup on Wednesday by a 19-7 score.
  • The Bengal defense leads the conference, and is 19th nationally in caused turnovers, causing 13.25 per game. The Bengals also lead the conference with 21.0 ground balls per game.
  • Schultheis has scored 10 goals in her last two games. She tallied a career-high six goals in a loss to Potsdam on Saturday, then scored four times in the win over Mount Aloysius on Wednesday. She is the SUNYAC leader in draw controls with 57 in eight games, and her 7.12 draw controls per game are 24th nationally.
  • Nelson tallied four saves in Wednesday's victory, bringing her career saves total to 329, good for fourth all-time. She holds an 11.58 goals against average and a .369 save percentage in 414 minutes this season.
  • A pair of attackers are on scoring streaks. Sarah Fineour (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) scored six goals on Wednesday, extending her streak to six consecutive games. Julia Wachna (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga) tallied a pair of goals in the same game, and is now riding a five-game goals streak, matching the longest of her career.
  • Annie Wells (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) continues to have a  great rookie season, as her 27 caused turnovers lead the conference. Her 3.38 caused turnovers per game is ninth in the country.
 
A PEEK AT PLATTSBURGH
  • Plattsburgh enters the weekend with a 3-4 overall record, splitting the first two SUNYAC contests. The Cardinals fell to then-No. 24 Cortland 15-5 on Mar. 26 and defeated Fredonia by a 14-7 score last Saturday. In between, the Cardinals posted a 15-5 non-conference win over Russell Sage.
  • The Cardinals average 10.14 goals on 21.1 shots per game.
  • Offensively, Plattsburgh sports three double-digit scorers, including leading goal scorer Caroline Noia, with 13 goals to go along with seven assists.
  • Emily Caoili leads the team with 10 assists, adding eight goals for 18 points, while Lindsay Guzzetta has 12 goals and three assists for 15 points.
  • Janey Adams leads the team with 18 ground balls, while Emma McLaughlin leads the way with 15 caused turnovers.
  • Johanna Malone leads the way with seven games in cage, sporting a 12.84 goals against average and a .400 save percentage.
 
THE HISTORY
  • The Bengals and Cardinals have met only once as lacrosse opponents, during the 2019 season. The Bengals made the trip up to Plattsburgh, coming home victorious with a 19-6 win on April 27.
