Nelson and Schultheis Lead Lacrosse to Win on Senior Day

BUFFALO, NY – Senior Janae Nelson (Elmont, NY/Elmont Memorial) made a career-high 25 saves, and fellow senior Liz Schultheis (Holley, NY/Brockport) scored three goals and had three assists, to lead the Buffalo State lacrosse team to a 13-8 home victory over Plattsburgh on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORE
 
-Nelson's 25 saves were one shy of tying Stefani Mitchell's single-game program record, and helped Buffalo State remain in the game despite Plattsburgh holding a 43-22 advantage in shot attempts.
 
-Sarah Fineour (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) was the leading goal scorer for Buffalo State, tallying four goals on seven shot attempts.
 
-Schultheis's three goals came on five shot attempts, and she also scored the game-winning goal for the Bengals.
 
-Tala Abdellatif (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Sage Running Rabbit (Siksika, AB/Strathmore) each scored a pair of goals for Buffalo State.
 
-Kacey Stack (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) and Lauren Rinow (Lakeview, NY/Frontier) also scored, while Ricki Miller (Ohsweken, ON/Hagersville) had two assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
-Plattsburgh dominated the opening minutes of the game scoring twice to grab an early 2-0 lead.
 
-A pair of goals by Fineour in the final ninety seconds of the quarter tied the score at 2-2 after one period of play.
 
-Schultheis scored to give Buffalo State the lead with 8:43 left in the first half, but the Cardinals responded with a score less than forty seconds later.
 
-Schultheis scored again with 5:30 remaining in the half to give the Bengals the lead for good, sparking a 7-0 run to build a comfortable lead for Buffalo State.
 
-Nelson had 12 saves at halftime, and had allowed just three goals on 19 shot attempts.
 
-After Buffalo State had scored the first four goals of the second half, Plattsburgh scored four of the final five goals in the quarter to pull within four at 11-7 after three.
 
-Buffalo State outscored Plattsburgh 2-1 in the fourth quarter for the 13-8 victory.
 
FOR THE FOES
 
-Jordan Kowalski had two goals and two assists to lead the Cardinals, while Emily Caoili also scored twice.
 
-Plattsburgh held Buffalo State to just 19-for-34 on clearance attempts.

SENIOR DAY

-Prior to today's game, Schultheis and Nelson were honored and recognized for their contributions to Buffalo State lacrosse.
